The couple were due to marry later this year but just one day after their wedding invites were issued in May, a statement was released announcing that they had ended their relationship.
At the time, the statement, which had been issued by 25-year-old McIlroy said the break-up was "mutual and amicable", however Wozniacki has now admitted she was left "shocked" at the split, which happened during a 10-minute phone call.
Speaking on the In Depth with Graham Bensinger show, the tennis star added that the pair had spent time together earlier that day.
She revealed: "I was shocked, I thought at least I would get a face-to-face or something but there was nothing. It was just a phone call and then I did not hear from him again.
"It kind of just ended and I don't think you expect yourself to be in a situation like that. You can't prepare yourself.
"It was very hard because he made it very public from the start. He put out a press release and all of that so it just got put in my face. I think I was in just a bit of a shock phase for a while."
However, the 24-year-old has said after taking a little time out, as well as a holiday, she has now moved on and is in a better place.
"I felt refreshed and I felt a new self.
"You know what? It kind of just ended and I don't think you expect yourself to be in a situation like that. It's taught me a lot. I definitely learned a lot about myself, about relationships.
"I'm definitely on the other side now... I've moved on."
McIlroy and Wozniacki started dating in the summer of 2011. They announced their engagement on New Year's Eve last year.
