In fact, splashing out on new clothes, blow-drys and even fake tan all make it onto many a mother's 'to-do' list for the back-to-school routine.
According to Debenhams, who commissioned the study, 64% of mothers admitted purchasing a new outfit for the new school year, while 76% scheduled beauty appointments and treatments to coincide with their children's first day back.
Looking at the fashion stakes, knitwear, coats and boots were among the most popular items to be bought, with the fashion retailer reporting a 160% increase in womenswear over the last month with winter scarves and boots the top sellers.
While many mums said they didn't care for fashion on the school run, a staggering 82% said they planned what they were going to wear for the first day of term "either the night before or earlier". Beauty is also important to many mums, with 76% arranging appointments for their child's first day back. This is so they can look their best at the school gate, and treatments include fake tan, waxing, hair-colouring, a hair cut or a blow-dry.
Make-up also featured highly among many women, the research found, with 83% admitting they would be wearing make-up to the school gates, while a further half said they had bought a new cosmetic to use.
A spokesperson for Debenhams said: "Obviously we see a jump in back-to-school clothing for children, but we are now also seeing a rise in categories of womenswear, footwear and beauty lines as well.
"Some women are going for whole new outfits to wear to the school-gates, while others are just opting for one of two things like a new jacket, or skirt.
"Of course many of these items will also be for the office but it seems that the September back to school period triggers a wardrobe and make-up-bag revamp for mothers across the board."
