A new survey has revealed that – according to men – 40% of women in Britain wear too much make-up.
The new survey, commissioned by St Ives', found that men actually prefer the natural look on their female counterparts, as opposed to layers of 'war paint'.
Interestingly, two-thirds of females admitted to being heavy-handed when it came to the contents of their make-up bag, but only because they feel it is what men want. For three quarters of the men polled, however, they say this is not the case, preferring to opt for the more natural look.
Of the 1,000 women surveyed, half apply make-up almost 1,500 times a year, while two-thirds will spend just three-and-a-half-weeks a year 'make-up free'.
When it comes to the application, one in 10 women confessed they wear cosmetics purely to impress the opposite sex, but it doesn't always have positive results. For example, 45% of male respondents said that too much make-up is a turn-off, with fake tan (33%), bright red lipstick (5%) and false eyelashes or thick eyebrows (4%) also making the list.
For the few, brave, men who have voiced such an opinion on a woman's make-up, one in 10 admitted they were dumped soon afterwards.
Some women say wearing the make-up makes them more confident, while more than half said it just makes them feel better. Others were more extreme in their actions, with 14% saying they refuse to leave the house unless cosmetics are applied, while 17% have no issue in cancelling a date if they have no make-up to hand.
Looking at the times when women do actually choose to go bare, Sunday is the most likely day, with 48% of women choosing to ditch the make-up.
As part of St Ives' campaign to encourage more women to go natural, the firm has teamed up with The Only Way Is Essex star Lydia Bright, who also agreed to go make-up free for their photoshoot.
Pamela Uddin, Brand Manager at St. Ives', commented: "Our research reveals that British women only spend the equivalent of three and a half weeks of the year make-up free and completely natural – a small amount of time when you consider that we spend the majority of our lifetime hiding our natural beauty from the world as a result.
"We hope women across the UK will take heed of our research and follow Lydia's lead by having the confidence to pare back the amount of make-up they wear on a more regular basis and letting their own natural radiance shine through."
Ms Bright, 23, added: "I am a total girly girl and when I'm filming TOWIE, I get glammed up but I actually try to go bare as much as possible when I'm not on camera.
"I hope that my involvement will encourage other women to follow my lead, wear less make-up and embrace their natural beauty. I want this to show women that you can look better without make-up."
