The study, commissioned by Bacofoil and conducted by YouGov, found that one in four parents, with children aged 18 or under, had broken school rules which stated what food is or is not allowed in a pupil's lunchbox.
The main offending item was crisps (54%), with chocolate bars in second place (47%). Biscuits were next on the list of forbidden foods with 39%, in addition to sweets (21%), sugary drinks (17%) and nuts (15%).
Adrian Brown, Managing Director of Bacofoil Wrap Film Systems, said: "We don't think mums need to get tough lunch box demands from their children, but we do think they can involve them and make lunchboxes more fun."
In response to the findings, Bacofoil has designed a 'Lunch Box Makeover' campaign to help parents on how to make their child's lunch box more healthy. The campaign includes hints from mothers and nutritionists.
