Orkney Registrars Prepare For Changes

The Orkney Islands Council (OIC) has said that from next week (1 September), registrars in Orkney will be allowed to perform civil marriage or civil partnership ceremonies all year round and in any place in the county. This is a change to the current arrangements as couples are required to have their ceremony take place at an approved venue.

Patricia Breck, Orkney's Senior Registrar, explained: "All of the Civil Marriage and Civil Partnership ceremonies we conduct are personalised and tailored to meet the needs of the couple – and this includes the venue.

"In the past we have been restricted to where we could conduct these ceremonies, so we are delighted that with the implementation of the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Act 2014 we can now offer a much more extensive choice to couples.

"There are so many beautiful and unique venues in Orkney, both indoors and out, which could be considered – from halls and historic buildings, to brochs, beaches and gardens."

She added: "We are happy to discuss couples' ideas around time and place and will always endeavour to meet a couple's requests to ensure that their special day is unique."
