In an interview with The Insider, the America's Got Talent host, confirmed the pair are currently living apart.
The state of the couple's marriage has been subject to speculation for a number of months, but this is the first time either party has commented – or confirmed – the reports.
Speaking to the publication, the 33-year-old said: "There is trouble in paradise. We have been living in separate houses for a few months."
He added that their children, three-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan, are his "main focus".
He did not comment on the reasons behind the couple's marriage problems, but denied it was due to infidelity.
Carey, 44, and Cannon married in April 2008, just weeks after they started dating. In October 2010, they confirmed they were expecting their first child, and in April 2011, Carey gave birth to fraternal twins. In 2013, the pair renewed their wedding vows at a lavish ceremony at Disneyland, California.
