Just hours earlier, the man, who has been named by US media as Brad Parker, asked his girlfriend to marry him.
It is understood Parker, 36, fell from Matthes Crest, one of the most difficult peaks in the park. Earlier that day, the couple had climbed to the summit of nearby Cathedral Peak where Parker had proposed and his girlfriend, Jainee Dial, had said yes.
Following the proposal, Ms Dial is thought to have left the scene, while Parker stayed behind. Shortly afterwards he fell. In a statement, Yosemite Park Ranger Kari Cobb said the climber was alone and without any ropes. Other climbers on the route saw him fall. Fatigue could have been a factor in Parker's fall, his father has said.
