The study, conducted by LoveLite, found that the same proportion also ensure they try to look as glamorous as possible as they drop their own children off at school. Teachers are also judged by parents, with 64% of mums saying they judge the staff members on their appearance.
With this pressure placed onto women, it is therefore not surprising to discover that the stress to look as good as possible when dropping children off at school is at its greatest on the first day back after the summer holidays. Some 62% of women said they make extra effort to look their best.
When it comes to appearance, 39% of mums apply make-up before doing the school run, while 14% use perfume and 7% blow dry their hair. Other, more extreme, measures women undertake to prepare for the school run include fat freezing treatment. According to LoveLite's Harley Street clinic, demand for their fat freezing treatments have increased by 20% this month alone.
The reasons for all these preparations can vary. The most popular reason (17%) is that mums are trying to impress the other mothers around, but 9% said it was to look good for their child's teacher. An honest 5% said it was to impress other fathers.
A spokesperson for the firm is quoted as saying: "Competing to look good on the school run may sound silly to many people but it happens at every school in the country. Women do feel under pressure to look good and the mum who makes a special effort every day always attracts a lot of attention. That is why we are so busy at this time of year."
