The polled, which has been commissioned by credit check firm Experian, asked more than 2,000 adults about the most attractive qualities in a potential partner.
For women, 87% said a man needed to have a good sense of humour, while 75% said he also needed to be financially responsible. Intelligence, a good salary and good looks also made the list.
A good sense of humour also topped the most attractive quality a man looks for in a woman (80%), but good looks was also high on their list, as was intelligence and clear life goals.
Elsewhere, the survey found that six in 10 couples have fallen out over money, and while 70% make large financial decisions together, over-spending is still the cause of half of all arguments.
Jo Hemmings, a dating and relationship expert, is quoted as saying: "Shared, core values are one of the components of any successful relationship.
"It's worth remembering that attitudes and approaches to spending are core values and not an indication that you are shallow or greedy.
"Being candid with your partner about each other's financial position is important but it doesn't mean that you can't also have a few additional guilty pleasures."
