Commissioned by the Men's Health Forum, the study revealed that marriage could change a man's eating habits, and ultimately, his waistline.
The team behind the research, from Leeds Metropolitan University, found that married men tend be more overweight or obese than men who are single. A reason for this could be because men who are married eat more sugary treats such as cakes and buns, than their single counterparts. The study found that they are also more likely to drink "significantly" more wine.
However, the reasons as to why marriage can make such a difference to a man's diet or attitude to weight is unclear, but researchers said one possibility is that they can now "relax" following their wedding day. Another suggestion was that a man might marry a good cook and therefore ends up eating richer food than he did in the past. Or maybe it is because some wives 'deliberately' overfeed their other halves so as to make them less attractive to other women; as least, that's another theory that has been suggested by the preliminary findings.
Tam Fry, an obesity expert from the National Obesity Forum, is quoted by the Daily Mail as saying: "The problem is that men have done all the hard work. They've taken the woman out to dinner and made a fuss of her and all that stuff and now it's payback time. The woman looks after her husband and the man just sits back and gets fat.
Mr Tam, who has been married for almost 50 years, added: "I have to think of my own circumstances. My wife cooks for a small army and I have to be very careful how much I eat. The woman wants to please the man.
"You can get to a man through his stomach – but it's really up to the man to work out whether he wants to be a slob."
