A new survey has revealed the lengths singletons in Britain are going to in order to impress on a first date. For example, single souls will spend an average of £90 on grooming themselves before their big date.
The preparation includes a manicure, a spray tan and a haircut, as well as an additional £42 on a new outfit, according to the recent study by VoucherCodes.co.uk. When it comes to the date itself, singletons will spend an average of £50 on food and drink.
Surprisingly, however, it is actually men who now spend more time – and money – on prepping themselves for a potential partner. The study found that in order to make the best first impression, men will spend £93 on grooming; with an average of £18 on a pre-date haircut, and the remaining £75 on other grooming treatments, including spray tans. For women, they spend just £83. The national average for first-date preparations is said to be £132.
Looking at different areas of the UK, those in Coventry spend the most (£204) on first-date preparations. This was closely followed by singletons in Birmingham (£200) and Londoners (£191).
Less keen to splash the cash, are those from Cardiff (£95), Wrexham (£92) and Gloucester (£83).
While it is expensive for many, the way in which people go about finding love has changed. For example, technology is now the preferred way to land a date compared to the previous tradition of old-fashioned courtship. Of those surveyed, 37% admitted they had used a dating website, app or social networking site to find a partner. 12% said they used a dating app.
Some 22% said they still hoped to meet their other half through friends, while just 4% were looking for an office romance.
Of those in a new relationship, 60% said they found their partner on Tinder. A further 55% of new couples found each other on a dating site, with 46% using another dating app. Blind dates came next on the list (37%), while Facebook was the place for 30% of couples. Interestingly, just 21% said they had found love on a speed date.
A spokesperson for VoucherCodes.co.uk said: "It seems Britons have a serious case of first date butterflies, spending nearly £150 on their appearance to make the ultimate first impression.
"With technology giving singletons access to more potential partners than ever before, dating is an exciting experience but could prove an expensive habit."
