According to The Sun, the incident happened on Wednesday, but details have just started to emerge.
It is understood that the former rugby player was running up and down a street, as well as running "in and out of cars" and behaving in an agitated manner.
Katona, 33, is said to have been upset as she watched her husband, and a source is quoted by the paper as saying: "She [Kerry] was crying, in bits, none of the the kids were around."
They added that Kay thought someone was trying to kill him. They explained he was shouting: "Kerry, Kerry, they're going to f***ing kill me. They are hitting me with the hammer. Why are you letting them do this?
"Kerry, Kerry, open the gate, please, love... Call me a f***ing ambulance."
Emergency services were called to the scene in Oxon. Kay was overpowered by officers from the Thames Valley Police and he was taken to a hospital.
A spokesperson for Katona has declined to comment, but on Thursday, Thames Valley Police confirmed the arrest.
In a statement they said: "Thames Valley Police can confirm that officers were called to a road in Chinnor shortly after 6pm [on Wednesday] following concerns for the welfare of a man.
"A 34-year-old man was detained at the scene and taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, where he was detained under the Mental Health Act. He was later discharged."
Katona and Kay are due to tie the knot next month. They have been friends for a number of years but only started dating in 2012. They announced their engagement last year and in April, the couple welcomed their first child together, daughter named Dylan Jorge. While Dylan is Kay's first child, his partner is also a mum to Molly 12, and Lilly Sue, 11, from her first marriage to Brian McFadden, and Heidi, seven, and five-year-old Maxwell from her second marriage to Mark Croft.
