In July, however, it seemed he had spent too long in the American city when his family had not heard from him. One of the messages his wife left for him read: "When will you be home, Tom? Your kids need you." Some of the former model's friends were quick to support her actions, with one asking if Williams had "forgotten" about his family.
At the time, he did not publicly respond to the comments and it is understood he is now back in the UK, a few weeks after he was first meant to have arrived.
Having remained silent on the speculation that his marriage is in trouble, he finally took to his Twitter account on Thursday where he shared a, somewhat cryptic, picture of the cartoon character Garfield throwing a screwed up piece of paper in the bin. The image was captioned: "Your opinion has been duly noted."
He added: "Lots of these floating around right now - shame you don't know what you're talking about."
His wife soon retweeted the post, alongside an picture of a monkey holding his hands over his eyes, which is thought to mean 'see no evil'.
The response has fuelled speculation that the couple's relationship is in jeopardy, but they are trying to work through the issues.
McLean and Williams tied the knot in June 2009. They have two children together, sons Rocky and Striker.
