The poll, carried out by travel agency Thomas Cook, found the 18 to 24-year-old and 35 to 44-year-old age groups are the most likely to be naughty on holiday, at 34% and 27%, respectively.
When it comes to informing the other half about what occurred during the trip, some 40% said they didn't want to let their partners know they had been too drunk, while 29% named nudity-related incidents. 14% said they spent too much money while they were away and didn't want their partner to know. However, not everything is kept secret – more than two-thirds of those polled confessed they would at least share an edited version of events with their other half.
Despite these findings, a third of Britons believed a break away with a close friend actually helped make a relationship stronger or even saved their marriage. 40% even confessed to missing their partner while they were away.
Commenting on the findings, Futurologist William Higham, from Next Big Thing, who worked on the research with Thomas Cook, said: "'The more complicated our lives get, the more we focus on 'who we are' and the more we compartmentalise our lives, the greater number of different friendship groups we have.
"The more this happens, the less our partners are able to fulfil all our needs and the more we feel trapped unless we have occasional time when we can indulge this or that side of our personality."
He added: "We believe that the rise in holidays with friends is being driven by another trend – the increasing importance of friendship. Today, more and more people have a close group of friends that they consider to be a surrogate family (a 'framily')."
