One in nine children in Britain have never visited a beach.
That's according to a new survey by train company First Great Western, which said 11% of under-14 have never visited a British beach. A further 36% have never made a sandcastle, while 53% said they had never been crabbing. 52% have never skimmed stones over the water, while 43% admitted they had never held a shell to their ear to listen to the sound of the ocean.
Other experiences today's children are missing, include the historic site Stonehenge with 80% never having visited. The Roman Baths in Bath, and the Tower of London are two of the other landmarks a majority of children have not visited, at 85% and 73% respectively. 65% of Generation Z, which is those born after the year 2000, have not been beside the sea in Cornwall, while 68% had not played in the sand at Devon.
A reason for the high percentages is that a quarter of parents (26%) feel that overseas holidays are less expensive; this is despite 69% saying they had fond memories themselves of visiting the beach when they were children. Another factor influencing the results, with the poor British weather being the reason for 45% of parents taking their kids abroad on a holiday.
Philip Edgerton, of First Great Western, commented: "A lot of individuals and families may not even know about the plentiful beaches, landscapes and landmarks the UK has to offer. With so many of these in the south west, First Great Western wants to help [travellers] visit great places and get more children enjoying the British seaside this summer holiday."
The firm has subsequently launched a Facebook app to help families discover what Britain has to offer this summer.
