Cole and Fernandez-Versini met just three months ago at the Cannes Film Festival, and over the weekend, the singer announced on her official website that the couple had married in secret.
Just four guests, one of which was Cole's mother, attended the private ceremony on the Caribbean island of Mustique on 7 July.
While the 31-year-old received many congratulatory messages on her marriage, others were quick to criticise her for tying the knot so early into the relationship. However, her former bandmate, Nicola Roberts, has since jumped to her defence saying that Cole is "happier than ever".
In a message on Instagram, she simply said: "You can be in a relationship for two years and feel nothing; you can be in a relationship for two months and feel everything.
"Time is not a measure of quality; of infatuation, or of love."
Cheryl was previously married to footballer Ashley Cole, but after allegations emerged that he had been unfaithful, they divorced in 2010. Following their separation, the singer chose to keep her married surname explaining that she "wasn't ashamed" of her marriage. However, on Monday night she had dropped her ex-husband's surname from her Twitter handle and confirmed that she has taken her new partner's name and is to be called Mrs Fernandez-Versini.
