Couple's Most Off-Putting Habits Revealed

Leaving clothes lying around the house and having excessive wind are just two of the most off-putting habits a person's partner can have.

That's according to a new study commissioned by ukbathrooms.com.

The poll, which is part of ongoing research into domestic behaviour, involved 2,139 people over the age of 18, with an equal divide between the genders. They were asked to vote for the most undesirable bathroom or household habits of a potential partner and the results – for both the men and women – were interesting.

Participants were first asked: "What is the most off-putting habit a prospective partner could have?"

They were then asked to select from a list of potential options. Once this happened, respondents were then asked how these bad habits would affect their relationship with a prospective partner.

56% decided to be brutally honest and said they "could not be in a relationship with someone", if that person was guilty of the off-putting habits. Of that 56%, the majority (69%) were men.

The rest of those polled weren't as harsh, with 32% saying the habits "would be irritating, but I would attempt to change their ways", while the remaining 12% admitted that it would bother them, but they "would learn to live with it".

A spokesperson for ukbathrooms.com is quoted as saying: "Whilst bad habits that annoy your other half are inevitable in any relationship, it does seem very interesting that the majority of problems highlighted in our findings are focused on bathroom behaviour.

"More than half the people surveyed said they couldn't be in a relationship with someone if they possessed what they considered to be the worst habits. Maybe the secret to a perfect relationship is separate bathrooms?

"The most surprising result of our survey is that men seem to be more put off by a prospective partner's bad aspects than women are.

"Whilst this breaks the age-old stereotype that men are the slobs, one does have to question how someone could jeopardise a potential relationship for something as trivial as a plug full of hair or a messy floor."

Men's top five most off-putting household habits for women:

Leaving dirty dishes around the house (39%)

Having excessive wind (27%)

Having a mouldy bathroom (23%)

Leaving the toilet seat up (14%)

Clothes on the floor (11%)

Women's top five most off-putting household habits for men:

Leaving hair in the plughole (41%)

Leaving clothes on floor (34%)

Nail clippings on floor (24%)

Having excessive wind (16%)

Compulsive cleanliness (13%)
