Thicke made the comments in an interview with New York's Hot 97 radio station. Opening up about the couple's separation, he admitted: "It's not that simple. It was right [but] sometimes people grow apart. You don't build love in a day and you don't lose it in a day.
"We're apart because we just couldn't be together any more, for a while. There's a 100 different reasons, there isn't just one. There's a long list. I changed, and I got a little too selfish, a little too greedy, a little too full of myself."
He added: "Maybe a year or two off, we'll become our own people without each other and it'll be more stable."
The singer, who revealed he has not seen his ex-wife for four months, has named his new album after his partner, but said: "She hasn't heard [the album, called Paula]. She's only heard a few songs and I don't think she wants to hear it right now. I can't speak for her, but I think space is an important part of any healing process.
"She's the best girl in the world, a great mother, and still a good friend. I want to wish her well and let her know that she's a great person and she deserves to have a good life.
"She was my rock. Everything we have right now, we built together. I'm a man. I messed up and had to lie for a while. Then I stopped lying."
Thicke has tried to win back his childhood sweetheart ever since the split by offering a number of public apologies to her regarding his behaviour. The couple first met in 1991 and started dating two years later. They married in 2005 and have a four-year-old son, Julian, together.
In February 2014, it was confirmed that the couple had decided to separate.
