The Coldplay frontman made the comments in an interview with Steve Wright's Big Show on Radio 2. The singer, 37, added that the split also influenced him to express his "bad feeling" into the band's new album, Ghost Stories.
He said: "You can choose your paths in life, I find, when you get to a point where you're like, 'I could either jump off a bridge or I could try and turn this around'. I'm sure lots of people have that in much harder instances. You just find the right tools.
"I feel so grateful," he added. "Especially over the last couple of years, music has been alchemising.
"Going through something difficult in your life, music for me is always a friend and something that helps you to figure things out.
"That's always what I'm doing in the middle of the night. I'm very grateful to be here. Every day is a blessing. That's how I feel."
In March, Paltrow and Martin, who had been married for 10 years, issued a statement confirming they were to separate, in a move they described as "conscious upcoupling".
The pair married in a secret ceremony in December 2003, just days after they confirmed the actress was expecting their first child. The couple had already been together for a year, after reportedly meeting backstage at a Coldplay concert. They have two children together, a 10-year-old daughter named Apple, and a son, Moses, aged eight.
