Nick Knowles Defends Delivery Room Absence

Nick Knowles has been forced to defend his decision to stay away from the delivery room when his wife goes into labour.

The DIY SOS star, who made the comments during an interview with ITV's Lorraine, added that people should respect his decision.

On his reasons to stay away from the birth, he told host Lorraine Kelly: "First of all, she's the one actually having the baby so her rules go as far as I'm concerned. And secondly, I think it's our decision, not anybody else's.

"[We] got a lot of nasty mail and things which was really sad. [But we] also got a lot of mail from men saying, 'I didn't really want to be there but I didn't want to let my wife down'.

"We got a lot of emails from women saying, 'I didn't really want him in the room but I didn't want to disappoint him'."

He added: "So I think there's a lot of people out there not having this conversation, because it's what everybody expects to happen now. And bear in mind, I will just be outside the door.

"It's not like I'm not in the hospital or out playing golf somewhere. And if she changes her mind halfway through, then she changes her mind."

Knowles, 51, and his wife Jessica, 26, married in Rome in September 2012. While this is their first child together, Knowles is also a father of three from a previous relationship.
