Fewer Couples Eat Meals Together - Study

Communication is said to be vital in order to maintain a healthy relationship, however a new survey has found fewer couples in Britain spend time bonding around the dinner table in the evenings.

Instead, many are choosing to spend more time together in another area of the house – the bathroom.

The poll, carried out by Ideal Standard as part of their 'Bathroom Behaviours' report, found that 45% of couples spend more of their time in the bathroom together for a night-time chat, compared to just 29% of couples who eat dinner together.

Interestingly, the younger generation of couples, aged between 18 and 34 years, were the most open to "bathroom bonding". For example, just 16% of people in this category said they eat at the dinner table with their other half every day.

When it comes to bathroom bonding, the traditional embarrassment usually associated with the issue no longer seems to bother couples. Of the 1,000 adults surveyed, just one in 10 said they locked the door every time they are in the bathroom, while the rest said they were more than happy to leave the door unlocked so their partner could join them for a chat.

Commenting on the findings, Jenny Smith, specialist for Ideal Standard's 'Bathroom Behaviours', said: "For many couples, the bathroom is much more than just a place to have a quick shower and clean your teeth and is the key to a successful relationship because it is a place to relax, refresh, and have a good natter.

"We've found that increasing numbers of people are looking at how to make their bathrooms even more couple-friendly and 'his and hers' dual basin, baths big enough for two and dual showers are becoming increasingly popular, as couples consciously adapt their bathroom to boost the staying power of their relationship."
