Luxembourg Welcomes Same-Sex Marriage

Luxembourg is the latest country to vote in favour of legalising same-sex marriage.

On Wednesday, a vote was held among the country's MPs and an overwhelming majority (56-4) voted to bring the law into effect from early 2015.

Boris Dittrich, advocacy director of Human Rights Watch's LGBT programme, welcomed the news, saying: "This is a happy day for Luxembourg and for those who favour equal rights for all, irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

"The law will enable gays and lesbians in Luxembourg to marry the person they love and will strengthen the fundamental rights of everyone in Luxembourg to equality and non-discrimination."

"The decision to approve marriage equality in Luxembourg is a pivotal moment amid international efforts to guarantee the rights of LGBT people worldwide," Dittrich added.

In 2013, Luxembourg's Prime Minister Xavier Bettel announced he would introduce the new legislation after the parliamentary elections. Bettel is openly gay, and is the country's first openly gay Prime Minister.

Luxembourg is now the seventeenth country to pass a law to allow same-sex marriages to take place. Others include the Netherlands, UK and New Zealand, while 19 states in the US also support the legislation.
