It is understood the motion, which has been tabled in Parliament, calls for an end to the "offensive and outdated message" that marriage is a "business transaction between fathers".
Currently, in England and Wales, the names of the mothers of the bride and groom are not recorded on marriage certificates, but there is space for the details of the fathers.
Politicians have now asked the Home Secretary to change the law and bring marriage certificates into line with those who have civil partnerships. It added that: "Change is needed so that mothers are no longer erased from these important historical records."
The motion has been supported by 26 MPs from a number of political parties, while a petition on the change.org website has attracted more than 37,500 signatures.
