Gay Marriages Allowed In British Consulates

Same-sex marriages can now take place in more than 20 British consulates, the Government has confirmed.

Coming into force from Tuesday (3 June), the 'Consular Marriage and Marriages under Foreign Law Order 2014', will allow gay couples to marry in certain British consulates.

In a statement, the Foreign Office said it is to offer same-sex marriages in 23 countries where same-sex marriage is not legal, such as Russia and Serbia, and "local authorities" have given permission for the ceremonies to be carried out.

Same-sex marriages will be able to take place at the following British consulates: Australia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Japan, Kosovo, Latvia, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nicaragua, Peru, Philippines, Russia, San Marino, Serbia and Vietnam.
