According to The Times of London McIlory "called off his engagement with Caroline Wozniacki by telephone". The paper also reported that it came "less than a day after telling her how much he loved her".
McIlroy announced that he split from the tennis player on Thursday 22 May.
In a statement to the UK Press Association he said: "There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people.
"The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn't ready for all that marriage entails.
"I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we've had."
The couple announced their engagement on New Year's Eve.
