The study, carried out by FRONTLINEŽ Spot On, found that pet owners spend an average of 219 hours a year chatting with their furry friend, with dog owners the bigger culprits. They will talk to their pets for an average of 36 minutes a day, compared to 28 minutes for cat owners.
Interestingly, women are more likely to be found talking to animals compared to men, 34% and 28% respectively. A further 19% of women admitted they had even asked their cat or dog for advice.
The poll looked at how the role of pets in homes can provide therapeutic benefits for those living stressful lives.
Taking the place of a real counsellor, 41% said talking to their pet made them feel more relaxed, while 39% of women and 34% of men said they spend more time with their pet than with their partner. However, sometimes animals can cause problems in a relationship, with 10% of respondents saying they have ended a romance because their other half did not like their pet. A spokesperson for FRONTLINEŽ Spot On, said: "Our research has revealed that UK households place an important, and quite intimate, emphasis on our relationships with our pets, viewing them as important advisers to key decisions in our everyday lives.
"Pets offer companionship and unconditional love which can help soothe stress and anxiety."
