With the cost of a wedding steadily increasing, it is probably not surprising to hear that guests are now trying to cut corners when it comes to the cost of attending someone's big day.
In fact, many are now bypassing a couple's wedding gift list altogether – and instead choosing to spend as little as possible on the newlyweds.
The survey, commissioned by One4all, found that the average wedding guest spends in excess of £400 on a wedding when the gift, accommodation, hen and stag dos, and all the other elements are included. This could be a why a fifth of wedding guests now admit to ignoring a couple's gift list altogether, while a whopping 97% said they try to buy the least expensive gift on the list.
More than 35% argued that guests should be allowed to buy whatever gift they want for the happy couple, while 29% of couples who plan to marry said they would prefer to receive a gift card to allow them to purchase what they wanted, when they wanted.
Of those who do buy a gift, 70% said they would spend less than £50.
A spokesperson for One4all said: "Attending a wedding is getting more and more expensive for guests, as well as for the bride and groom.
"When it comes to gifts, the general consensus seems to be that the freedom to choose their own gift and not be constrained by gift lists is the preference."
