It is understood the actress is to become a parent with her ex-fiancé, Daniel Riley.
The couple are said to have separated in 2013, but it was only confirmed last month.
The news of Sweeney's pregnancy comes as her new play, Sex and the Suburbs, which she co-wrote, opened on Friday night.
An agent for the 43-year-old said: "Claire could not be happier. To be pregnant and starring in her own show in her home town of Liverpool is all her dreams come true at once."
The pregnancy was later confirmed by the actress herself via her Twitter account, where she told her followers: "Thrilled to say my show that I co wrote Sex and The Suburbs has opened to rave reviews, but the BEST news is I'm 5 months pregnant!! (sic)".
Sweeney and Riley announced their engagement on Christmas Eve 2012, and had planned to marry in the House of Lords. A reason for the couple's split is not known.
