The Big Brother host was being interviewed by Fearne Cotton for a new television documentary – Fearne & McBusted – which delves into the personal lives of each boyband member.
Emma and her husband, Matt, were filmed at home for the show and were asked about how the singer first entered rehab, just three months after they started dating.
Emma, 38, fought back tears when she admitted: "He went to rehab when I'd known him for three months, so initially we hadn't known each other for very long. I was kind of in this whirlwind with him.
"You don't really think about it and then the more time goes along and he went in again.
"Firstly our relationship is quite serious now, because we've been together for a couple of years, and [secondly] this isn't a kid that needs a couple of weeks' break, it's someone who does genuinely have a problem. It just takes time."
She continued: "You have to ask yourself... I'm not going to leave him because he has a problem...you have to stick together and do it."
And speaking about her husband's sobriety, she laughed: "He's very boring! But I'll tell you what, I'll take boring over the alternative. I'll take the tattoos and the motorbikes over all the other stuff."
Emma and Matt married in July 2008 after three years of dating. They welcomed their first child together – a daughter Isabelle – in June 2009, and in November 2011, they announced they had become parents to a baby boy named Ace.
