Supermarkets are apparently the place to go when looking for a date, new research has suggested.
The poll, commissioned by Shopitize, revealed that one in eight Brits, or 13%, had swapped phone numbers with someone they had met while out food shopping.
A further 6% admitted they had dated someone they had met in the supermarket – while 2% had gone on to marry someone they met at the supermarket.
Of those polled, 23% said a person's shopping basket was a good indicator of their personality, with 63% claiming they would be more attracted to someone with similar shopping and eating habits.
Surprisingly, 20% said the supermarket was a great place to meet people, with 13% saying it was easy to 'break the ice' in those surroundings. Some 9% of respondents agreed that supermarkets are more relaxed that bars or clubs, while 2% admitted they didn't get out that much, so it was a good place to meet others.
So, when is the perfect time to meet that partner? Well, according to the research, 6.38pm is the best time to pick up a date, with many singletons descending on the supermarket in the early evening. Elsewhere, those single ladies should shop at Sainsbury's on a Saturday – as this is the most popular day for men to hit the stores. For men, they should pop into the supermarket on a Tuesday, as more women shop on that day, apparently. The most female-friendly supermarket was found to be Morrisons – 60% of the shoppers were women, compared to men.
Commenting on the findings, UK psychologist Dr David Holme, is quoted in the Daily Mail as saying: "Lust-fuelled moments in darkened clubs and bars are the worst times to be selecting a partner for life.
"In contrast, in the clear light of the supermarket aisle, the contents of our trolley will say more about our personalities and habits than interrogation by a dating website.
"Anxious approaches and trite chat-up lines are not needed when you can offer to help pass goods or advice in an unpretentious easy atmosphere, free from deafening DJs or hundreds of prying eyes.
"In the relaxed supermarket aisles, we are more likely to engage naturally with prospective partners than be subject to the artificial barrage of people 'on the look out'."
