The study, commissioned by vouchercloud.com, found that 21% of people, aged between 18 and 35 and in a relationship, have secretly used a dating app or website behind their partner's back.
Those who took part in the research were asked, 'Have you ever used dating websites?', to which 58% said 'yes'. They were then asked, 'Have you ever used a dating website or app whilst in a relationship?', and a surprising proportion (21%) admitted they had.
14% even went as far as to say they were using a dating website or app while in their "current relationship".
Of those who admitted to online dating while in a relationship, they were asked if they had ever met someone on their profile, 56% said they only used the sites or apps to "look" or "message people" but did not intend to meet anyone. For 44% though, they said yes. They were then asked how far this meeting had gone – 39% said they had not cheated or had sexual contact with the person, but shockingly, 27% confessed they had ended up sleeping with the person.
Those behind the poll also separated the male and female participants and it was revealed that men are more likely to use dating apps than women. When it comes to the various dating websites, Plenty of Fish was the most commonly used site (43%), followed by Tinder (37%). Some 29% even admitted paying to become a member of Match.com.
Finally, when respondents were asked if they felt guilty about using a dating website behind their partner's back, 56% said yes and 44% said no – with 38% of these saying that it was in their best interest to "shop around".
A spokesperson for vouchercloud.com is quoted as saying: "Dating websites and apps are becoming increasingly mainstream. A few years ago, dating online was seen as the preserve of geeks and the hopeless. This certainly isn't the case now, with more and more people investigating relationship options via the internet.
"The anonymity of online dating though seems that it could be of benefit to those with a wandering eye. It's much easier to connect with someone discreetly online then it is to do so in a public place.
"Those who worry that they're in a relationship with a potential philanderer though might want to take the odd peek at bills if they're concerned, as it seems that a good percentage aren't savvy enough to cover their tracks."
