The Northern Ireland Assembly is currently debating the issue and will subsequently vote to introduce legislation, similar to the rest of the UK, that would allow gay couples to marry.
However, it has since emerged that on Monday, the DUP tabled a petition of concern regarding the motion. The move means that the plans will only pass if a majority of unionists and nationalists support it.
Yesterday (28 April), a number of Northern Ireland's Catholic bishops sent an open letter to the Assembly asking politicians to reject the motion, while the Church of Ireland also reaffirmed its opposition.
In England and Wales, the first same-sex marriages took place in March. A similar law was passed in February, and the first marriages are expected to take place in October.
