NI Assembly To Debate Same-Sex Marriage

The Northern Ireland Assembly is to debate the issue of same-sex marriage later this month, it has been revealed.

The motion has been filed by a number of MLAs.

On the NI Assembly website, the motion says: "That this Assembly notes that other jurisdictions on these island have moved forward with equal marriage rights for same-sex couples; believes that all couples, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, should have the same legal entitlement to marry and to the protections, rights, obligations and benefits afforded by the legal institution of marriage."

Northern Ireland is the only remaining nation in the UK that has chosen not to legalise same-sex marriage. In NI, political parties Sinn Fein, the SDLP and Alliance Party have all said they are in favour of changing the current laws, but the DUP has repeatedly vetoed debates on the issue.
