The poll, commissioned by Skout, found that while there are ways to impress a potential partner online, taking bathroom selfie or using a phrase such as "my cats" are not part of this.
When it comes to men, the study found that having a friend take a photo of you in a park on a sunny day, with some trees in the background and a dog by your side, is one of the best ways to impress a girl. It gives the impression that the man is friendly and caring, but also rugged. However, while mentioning a pet is okay, accompanying phrases such as "my dog" can reduce the attractiveness, and are said to be best avoided.
For women, the survey found that a natural look – with no pouting – in an outdoor setting gains the most attention.
Interestingly, selfies are now becoming a no-no when it comes to looking for love online, especially if they are 'bathroom' selfies.
Words are just as important as the image though. For male users, words such as "ambitious", "adventurous", "funny" and "spontaneous", received the most attention, while popular phrases for women included "athletic", "honest" and "partner".
Elsewhere, the most popular profiles all mentioned an energetic hobby, such as running (76%), going to the gym (68%) and yoga (47%); while seeing new places and being open to new ideas also rated highly.
A spokesperson for Skout said: "Long gone are the days of only meeting people at your local pub or coffee shop. We live in an age where online socialising can be a really meaningful and effective way to forge new personal bonds. The majority of people in our markets are now looking to the internet as a way of meeting new, exciting people."
