More Support For Same-Sex Marriage

Support for same-sex marriage in Ireland has increased, according to the latest Irish Times/Ipsos MRBI poll.

The Irish Government has promised to hold a vote on the issue next year.

Of those that responded to this survey, 67% said they would vote 'Yes' in the referendum, with 21% saying 'No'. The remaining 12% were still undecided.

When the undecided are removed from the poll, the 'Yes' figure is 76%, with the 'No' vote at 24%. This compared to 64% and 36%, respectively in a similar poll taken in November 2012.

Elsewhere, it was found that voters believe a traditional family of a father and mother is best suited to bringing up children by comparison with any other combination.

When it comes to the different age groups, however, younger voters are more likely to support same-sex marriage than older generations. Among the 18 to 24 age group, 80% said they would vote in favour of same-sex marriage, with 13% saying no, and 7% "undecided".

This contracts with those aged 65 and over, with 44% voting 'Yes', 40% saying 'No' and 16% undecided.

Women are also more in favour of a change in legislation than men, with 73% of women compared to 61% of men.
