The couple, who dated for four years, ended their relationship after Argent was accused of cheating on his partner.
Speaking to Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby on This Morning, the reality television star spoke fondly of his "first love", but admitted he paid the price for being famous.
The 26-year-old added that he hopes to explain his actions in his upcoming autobiography 'Living It Arg'.
He said: "I was still with Lydia at the time when the allegations were being made and obviously I thought at the time that if I was to admit to it that Lydia would finish with me.
"I did lose her in the end because it all just became too much.
"You've got to remember before TOWIE I didn't have any money, I had no attention from girls and as soon as the show started Lydia was the only girl I had ever been with, so when the show started I didn't deal with the fame too well."
He continued: "We haven't had any contact for, probably, the last year and a half. I like to think the book explains everything to Lydia. I think she will have comfort from knowing the reasons why I did it and the fact of how genuinely sorry I am...she's a big part of the book.
"It's not easy living your private life on TV, but that's the job, that's the decision we all made, so you've just got to go with it."
