It is thought a reason for this is to take advantage of the cheaper cost of living in resorts whose popularity has waned.
The report, from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), said there was a link between the high number of divorced people living in coastal towns and the inexpensive costs of housing and low prices in general. It added that people who have been through a separation could look for a cheaper place to live because of their "reduced economic assets".
Based on figures from the 2011 national census, the ONS also revealed the top 10 districts with the highest percentage of divorced residents.
Blackpool had the highest ratio with 13.1% of adults divorced, while Hastings was second with 12.8%. Torbay, Eastbourne, Weymouth, Great Yarmouth and the district of Thanet – which includes Margate and Ramsgate – also featured on the list.
Other potential factors given for the trend in divorcees heading for the seaside towns could be simply because they want a new start in life with different surroundings.
The ONS report said: "The top 10 were all in coastal areas, and mainly on the south coast of England, apart from Blackpool and Great Yarmouth. The top 10 all had higher average ages than England and Wales.
"Higher levels of divorced population may relate to the affordability of housing and living costs in some of these areas resulting in divorced people with reduced economic assets living there."
Elsewhere, the report suggested that the number of single people is increasing.
Between 2001 and 2011, the number of single people in England and Wales rose from 12.5 million to 15.7 million, with singletons accounting for 35% of the population.
