The poll, carried out by Warner Leisure Hotels, also revealed that in Northern Ireland, a romantic meal with a spouse is the best way to express their feelings, with two-fifths choosing this gesture. When it comes to the Welsh, however, they prefer to jump straight into the action by booking an overnight stay in a hotel.
Elsewhere, East Anglia is where a person will most likely receive a compliment, with almost half of residents in the area relying on compliments to reveal their feelings, while the south-east choose to help with the household chores. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Yorkshire, which was found to be the least romantic location in the UK – with almost 34% from the region admitting they had not done anything romantic for their partner in the last year.
The survey looked at couples over the age of 45 and who are in long-term relationships. When it comes to keeping the relationship successful, they said listening to your partner (39%), spending time together (29%), making sure you never go to bed angry (17%) and making sure you give each other space (15%) were important to remember.
A spokesperson for Warner Leisure Hotels said: "It's clear that each region has a different way of saying I love you.
"Relationships and romance require quality time together, trying new things as a couple and investment, but it's the small things, such as cooking a meal or going on a spontaneous trip for the weekend, that really do make the difference.
"No matter your age, or where in the country you live, it's always important to make your partner feel special."
