Stillbirth Rates At Record Low

The number of stillbirths, perinatal deaths and infant deaths in Scotland are at their lowest recorded level, official statistics have revealed.

In 2012, the stillbirth rate in Scotland fell to 4.7 per 1,000 births, the lowest rate in the UK, while infant death rates fell from 4% per 1,000 to 3.7% per 1,000.

Rates of neonatal and post-neonatal deaths also fell.

The findings from the Scottish Perinatal and Infant Mortality and Morbidity Report 2012 were welcomed by Public Health Minister Michael Matheson, but he added that the Scottish Government was not complacent in working to reduce the tragedy of stillbirths and infant deaths.

He said: "The death of even one baby is a tragedy for their family and so, while these figures are to be welcomed, there is no room for complacency in the fight to reduce the number of stillbirths and infant deaths.

"It is vital we continue to support women and mothers-to-be to make changes to their lifestyle, such as stopping smoking, eating healthily and remaining active.

"Ultimately the most important thing a mother can do to protect her baby, is visit her midwife or local maternity services as soon as she finds out she is pregnant.

"Midwives and healthcare professionals can identify any risks that could affect the health of the baby and tailor advice and support that is appropriate to both the mother, and their partner."
