The research, which has been commissioned by AXA, found that an increasing number of men are now buying their other half a temporary engagement ring – so they can avoid disappointing them if they choose the 'wrong' ring.
The poll involved engaged couples or those who had married within the last five years. It discovered that up to 15,000 women received a provisional ring – with a promise that they could choose their own permanent ring at a later date. While it might seem strange, men could be right with their decision as one in six (16%) who received an engagement ring from their partner said they were disappointed. Almost half of those who were disappointed said this way because they thought the large spend was "too much" (44%), while 35% said they didn't like the style.
For one in 12 (8%), they didn't receive or buy a ring at all, with a quarter of those couples taking the decision not to buy a ring and save the money for the wedding instead. Elsewhere, 36% felt it wasn't important to have an engagement ring, while 14% were forced to go without as their partner simply couldn't afford it.
When it comes to cost, the average amount spent on a permanent ring is £1,373, with men typically spending one month's salary. The 25-35 age group are the biggest spenders though, splashing out £392 more than the national average (£1,765). London tops the regional scales with a staggering spend of £3,548. Those in Yorkshire spend the least, at an average of just £607.
In contrast to this, 11% of men admitted they only spent one day's salary on their partner's engagement ring, with 24% confessing they spent less than four hours to find the "perfect diamond".
Commenting on the findings, Chris Jones, AXA Head of Brand, said: "While our research shows people spending a large amount on a ring appears to be going out of fashion – it is clear that engagement rings are still a little thing that means a lot to many couples planning to walk down the aisle."
AXA Operational Claims Director, Christine Matthews, added: "Engagement rings are not only expensive but they also hold sentimental value to the owner, which is of course irreplaceable."
