Sharp Fall In Number Of Marriages Recorded

The number of marriages in Scotland fell by almost 3,000 last year, according to provisional statistics released from the National Records of Scotland.

The fall of around 10% brings the annual total of marriages in 2013 to just above 2009 levels – which were the lowest recorded in more than a century.

In 2013, there were 27,547 marriages registered in the country.

The fall in the annual total comes on the back of three consecutive rises. In 2009, the figure was 27,524 with a peak of 30,534 in 2012.

Dumfries and Galloway is the council area with the greatest number of marriages – more than 4,000 – with Gretna Green playing a role.

Elsewhere, there were 530 civil partnerships – 216 male and 314 female – recorded, 44 less than during 2012.
