According to the Daily Mail, the accused – 43-year-old Karen Fletcher – was found guilty of burglary and jailed for nine months at Manchester Crown Court earlier this month.
The incident, which happened last year, first came to light when Beverley Meredith, 55, and her fiancé, David, noticed that their gold wedding bands were missing. After taking days to search for the missing items, a neighbour then showed them CCTV footage which revealed Ms Fletcher entering the couple's house.
Fletcher, who had been good friends with the bride-to-be for 26 years, is understood to have stolen a set of keys from the couple's home days earlier.
On the day of the theft, it was discovered that Fletcher spent 45 minutes inside the house before driving away with £4,500 of goods. The footage was then passed onto the police and the accused was arrested and charged. In October 2013, she pleaded guilty to burglary of a dwelling at Manchester Crown Court.
Some of the items taken by Fletcher included jewellery which belonged to Mrs Meredith's deceased daughter, Cathie. The items were pawned by the accused and attempts to trace the items since have been unsuccessful.
Speaking in court, a judge described Fletcher's behaviour as "diabolical".
Mrs Meredith has also spoken out about the incident and is quoted in the publication as saying: "I was heartbroken and disgusted when I found out she was behind it.
"Karen and I were best friends - I trusted and confided in her. I didn't think for one minute it could have been her. I was absolutely devastated."
