Reid, 43, and her former boyfriend Dominic Cotton ended their 15-year relationship earlier this month after it was revealed Mr Cotton had signed up to an online dating website.
The couple have three children together – Sam, 11, Finn, 10, and seven-year-old Jack.
A source close to the family are quoted by the Daily Mirror as saying: "There's been heartache and anger on both sides but they're determined to ensure this has as little impact on the children as possible.
"The boys are at an impressionable age and dealing with their parents' split will be tough enough. Susanna and Dom know they must brush their feelings to one side and focus on what makes the boys happy.
"Their relationship has failed but there's no way they will fail as parents."
Reid, who starred in Strictly Come Dancing last year and recently announced she is to leave the BBC for ITV, is said to have been left "shocked" by the couple's sudden separation.
The insider added: "It came as a total shock to Susanna – it was as though she thought it'd never happen. She was so wrapped up in what else was going on in her life she hadn't thought of the effect it might have.
"That was the whole problem for Dominic – even when things were falling apart around her she couldn't see it because she was so involved in her own projects."
