Carter and Duff dated when they were both teenagers, but ended their relationship 11 years ago. Carter and Duff were in an on-off relationship between 2001 and 2003, but their romance ended in 2003 when Carter was accused of cheating on his girlfriend. However, the singer remains hopeful of a potential reconciliation as it was revealed in January that Duff had separated from her husband Mike Comrie.
Taking to his Twitter account earlier this week, Carter, 26, first retweeted a photograph of Duff that described her as "flawless".
In separate messages that followed, the singer then told his fans: "Don't be that stupid d***** that loses the love of your life forever... Like me..."
He added: "I'll spend the rest of my life trying to better myself to get back to her. I don't care what ANY of you think."
Perhaps his message was cryptic, but when asked directly by a follower if he was referring to mother-of-one Duff, he simply replied: "Sure am."
Duff, who has not commented on the Twitter messages, has recently been spotted spending time with her ex-husband Comrie.
The couple first started dating in 2007. In February 2010, they married in Santa Barbara, California. In March 2012, they welcomed their first child together, a son named Luca.
