Dalai Lama 'Supports Gay Marriage'

The Dalai Lama has said he is in support of gay marriage.

The Buddhist monk made the revelation during an interview with American talk show host Larry King.

The interview, which will be aired in full next week, included the spiritual leader saying that gay marriage was "okay" and a "personal matter".

He explained: "If two people, a couple, really feel that way, it's more practical, more satisfaction, and both sides fully agree, then okay."

When he was asked if the issue of same-sex marriage should therefore be universally accepted, he admitted: "That's up to the country's law."

He did add, however, that homophobia was "wrong", stating: "It is a violation of human rights."

The Dalai Lama is Tibet's exiled spiritual leader. In 1989, he won the Nobel Peace Prize.
