The study, which has been carried out by brand vouchercloud.net as part of research into the role technology plays in the lives of consumers in America, also revealed that social media was another popular way to break up with a partner.
In fact, of those polled, 56% who went through a break-up last year chose to do so by technological means, with many saying they decided on the method to make the process "less awkward".
More than 2,000 people, aged between 18 and 30, took part in the research and each was asked to describe the "means through which your break-up was finalised".
More than half (56%) said their relationship ended by a text message, social media or email, with 62% admitting they were the one to end their relationship in this way.
Of those who ended the relationship, 55% said it made the entire situation "less awkward", while 61% who had dumped someone via technology admitted they did so because they had "deleted" or "blocked" their partner's phone number.
Ending a relationship with an email (58%) was said to allow the instigator to "fully explain their reasons".
Perhaps ironically, however, when asked if they would be annoyed if someone broke up with them digitally, a massive 73% said "yes", with many claiming the method is "too impersonal".
When it comes to other methods of calling off a relationship, only 2% of respondents admitted they had written their partner a letter.
Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson for vouchercloud.net said: "Digital has well and truly taken over, even when it comes to our relationships it seems.
"However you want to break up is entirely up to you, but it may be worth nothing that we found that quite a lot of people would be hurt by a digital break-up, as it's seen as a little too impersonal."
