According to reports, 36-year-old Amit Goyal told a judge presiding over the hearings that he did not attend his wedding ceremony, and that an imposter had stood in for him instead.
Mr Goyal, who is an investment banker, said the couple's wedding ceremony was held at a four-star hotel in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, in India, but rather than marry his wife, he was at his family home six hours away. As a result, he argued that his wife – Anita – could not divorce him, nor claim financial support for herself or the couple's six-year-old daughter because they were not legally wed. The claims were revealed on Monday, however Goyal lost his divorce case at the Court of Appeal.
Last year, his estranged wife had already been granted a decree nisi by Judge Mark Everall QC.
The couple, who are understood to have met on Indian dating website Shaadi.com, married in September 2003. They moved to Paris, then to Canary Wharf in London in 2007, but by 2011, their relationship had "irretrievably broken down" and Mrs Goyal left the couple's home.
Dismissing the groom's claims, Lord Justice Kitchin said: "I do not detect that [Judge Everall] had any real difficulty in arriving at his conclusion.
"Indeed, having regard to his finding that Mr Goyal's evidence pointed to him being unreliable, it seems to me that the conclusion to which he came was, in reality, the only one which was open to him."
Mrs Goyal said she was "very happy" following the outcome of the case.
