The current Wimbledon champion was holding a question and answer session with his fans on Twitter on Wednesday when he was asked if he planned to tie the knot.
The 26-year-old, who has dated Ms Sears since 2005, was asked by user @saravana_24: "When are you getting married?"
The tennis star replied: "We are getting married just after Wimbledon should be a great day."
His response sent his followers into a frenzy, with many passing on congratulatory messages, but an hour later, Murray told his fans: "3 things.. I don't smoke grass, I'm not getting married (yet) and I don't want to kill Rafael Nadal.. (sic)".
Following the Q&A session, a spokesman denied the couple are to marry, explaining it had been a "tongue in cheek answer".
This year's Wimbledon tournament will be held from 23 June to 6 July.
