Men Should Work Longer To Make Their Wife Happier - Study

Men who work longer hours at the office could actually be beneficial for their marriage, a new study has suggested.

The research, which has been published in the journal Social Forces, found that the more hours a husband spends working, the more his wife's quality of life will improve. The findings also claim that wives benefit the most when their husband works more than 50 hours a week.

The same, however, can not be said for when the roles are reversed, for when the women work long hours, the husband's health was found to suffer. This is said to be due to the amount of household chores that need to be carried out and therefore leaves no time for them to exercise.

The authors of the report, from the Universities of Texas and Indiana, looked at the relationships of almost 4,000 middle-aged men and women between 1979 and 2004. They discovered that the healthiest one were women whose husbands worked more than 50 hours a week, while those with the poorest health were men whose wives worked between 41 and 49 hours.

Commenting on the findings, the study said: "The greater income brought in by men's longer hours may be protective of women's health.

"In contrast, men whose wives work moderately long hours are particularly less likely to spend as much time on vigorous exercise or sports, such as running, swimming, or bicycling."

The researchers added that wives whose husbands work long hours may have enough money to pay cleaners which would give them time to exercise, but a woman's salary may not be as high in order to allow house-husbands the same luxury.

Campaign group, Mothers At Home Matter, are quoted in the Daily Mail as saying: "This underlines the true value of the work which women have traditionally done. It remains a huge and all-consuming job."
