Ken Sullivan, who currently lives in Utah with his wife and children, has made the next stage of the ambitious space programme and is now one of 1,058 applicants who could be chosen to colonise the red planet in the future.
Mr Sullivan, 38, is said to be excited about the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity before him, but his wife is not as agreeable – especially when her husband failed to run the idea by her first.
According to The Salt Lake tribune, his wife, Becky, is now deciding whether the couple should divorce.
She explained: "The question is do we get divorced now or get divorced later. If I stand in the way of his dreams and passions, then we get divorced now, so I have to be supportive."
Out of the 1,058 applicants left, only 24 will be chosen to go on the first Mars One mission which is scheduled for 2024. If Mr Sullivan was one of the those, he would have to leave behind his wife and four children who range from just six months old, to 13 years.
According to the newspaper, the older children are understood to have already had a long-distance relationship with their father as he worked as a contractor in Iraq fixing helicopters.
On his decision to potentially leave his life on Earth behind, Mr Sullivan is quoted as saying: "I just hope the family will be able to forgive me down the road.
"Hopefully there isn't too much hatred of my being selfish in pursuing a dream that isn't theirs."
